Include the full population, and the picture often looks like luck. This does not mean success is always luck. Availability Heuristic: If You Can Imagine It, It Must Be Common

Attribution error evolved because predicting other people's behavior was crucial for survival, and assuming stable character traits was a faster shortcut than investigating situational factors every time. If someone acted aggressively once, assuming they were aggressive by nature and avoiding them was safer than waiting around to see if they were just having a bad day. But in modern life, this shortcut creates deep misunderstandings. It drives harsh judgments of strangers, makes political opponents seem irrational rather than differently situated, and makes it almost impossible to understand homelessness, poverty, or addiction without defaulting to character-based explanations that miss the situational forces at play.
Status Quo Bias: The Devil You Know
You have had the same phone plan for years. It is probably not the best deal available. You know this. You have not switched. Not because you evaluated every option and decided your current plan was optimal, but because switching requires effort, involves uncertainty, and feels risky in a way that staying does not. This is status quo bias: a strong preference for the current state of affairs, independent of whether the current state is actually good.
